E-SESH LOVE | Randi + Dan | Classic prep in Nashville | Also: upcoming letterpress giveaway, next week’s free printable, and my best advice for stellar photos

Happy Friday, friendlies!  Ok, guess what?  I’ve got a lot to share.  Tee hee.  However, since free association rules the roost in these here parts, we’ll see just how much I end up covering.

First up, THIS SHOOT.

OMGILOVETHISSHOOTSOMUCH.  Why, you ask?  Ok, here’s the story.  My parents have a few photo albums (1000+), and one of them is home to a shoot JUST. LIKE. THIS ONE.  So, I mean, obvs., I have a thing for this session.  When my folks were a bit younger, they took fairly lavish trips, and one of them (let the bragging begin) was with Mikhail Baryshnikov, that guy who’s pretty good at ballet.  Anyway, some of the shots in today’s shoot remind me of photos of my Mom from that trip… except my Mom was wearing a teeny bikini.

P.S. – So was Baryshnikov.

P.P.S. Yes, I will be sharing shots of my Mom and of Baryshnikov – in their skivvies – on this blog.  … You’re welcome.  (Assuming my Mom doesn’t run to her upstairs closet and seal shut that album after reading this post.  Please, Mom… I’ve already promised the readers!  By the way, you look nice today, mama.)

Now, Randi and Dan aren’t wearing teeny bikinis, but I think they happen to look PHENOMENAL in their nautical attire.  Let me note here that I love nautical attire, and highly recommend it.  I’ve always been a fan of red, white and blue, not because I’m a fanatical patriot, but because I love block color clothing; it’s so versatile and so classic.  I get that from my Mom.  Which leads me to another point…

You’ll remember yesterday, I pushed the importance of having a great time at your wedding.  Dancing the night away is kind of a surefire way to make that happen.  Well, one of the main traits I inherited from my lovely mama is her tendency to smile big and often.  The woman smiles all. the. freaking. time.  Seriously.  And you know what?  It’s awesome.  Smiling just makes you feeeeeel better.  It has this weird way of making you think about the things in your life that are good, and lucky, and comforting.  And you know what else it does?  It makes you prettier.  My Mom has always told me, from a very young age, to smile.  It welcomes people in.  It’s contagious, like laughter.  And I’m not talking about those fake smiles biotches make.  Not those.  Those suck.  I’m talking about genuine smiles, that emit kindness and blessings and joy.

And here’s one more thing smiles tend to produce…

Awesome engagement shoot pictures.  Because, if you think about it, when you one day share these images with your children, just imagine how wonderful it’ll feel to let them see just how happy you were… and are… together.

A few words about Randi and Dan’s shoot, from photographer Kristyn Hogan:

The bride and groom learned to sail together and have a very classic, Kennedy-esque style so we styled their engagement shoot to reflect this. We went to a sailboat marina in Nashville, Tennessee and they wore classic, vintage boat shoes and 60′s reminiscent attire. We did the session in the late afternoon to give it that warm, classic preppy feel.

… And right when you thought it was over…

BAM!  Outfit change!

Wait a goshdarn second here.  I do believe I promised a couple of other things in this post.  Oh right… I remember :)

Ok, let’s see… for one, we’ve got an amazeballs FREE EDITABLE SAVE THE DATE design coming up next week from Kate, the mindblowing talent behind Ruby & Willow.  Yeah, believe it.  You. are. gonna. LOVE.

And this month, we’ve got something I like to call a MASSIVE LETTERPRESS WEDDING SUITE GIVEAWAY (whaaaaaaat?!  I know) coming from husband and wife paper masters, The Aerialist Press!  What’s that?  You want a taste of one of the suites?  Oh, ok, no harm in that…

If paper could taste good, that suite right there would be my late night snack.

Ok, happy Friday again, my loves!  Hope your weather predictions are better than ours!

Actually, one last thing: what is YOUR best advice for a great photo shoot?  Of course, you can say smiling too, I won’t get upset. ;)

xoxo!  – Alison

Love all of this...

These are beautiful shots! I love the classic nautical look too. Something just so clean and sharp about it! I say smile as much as possible–women worried about crow’s feet/laugh lines–c’mon. Show everyone you’ve had something to smile about your entire life!

This shoot has a fun, natural feel to it :) I love the feet dangling off the side of the boat shot! I think natural-looking make-up makes for great face shots. Not too overdone, just right.

I’d have to agree – smiling is easy, and it really does make photos look ‘happier” if that makes sense? I used to shy away from smiling in photos cause I was convinced my smile was hideous (I hated my teeth), but my fiance says I have a great smile and I’ve finally embraced it. Teeth and all. And I think I do look happier in photos when I smile. So I’m an example of it working. :)

Ok, I simply cannot wait to see your mom’s photos. I’m dying to see what your mom looks like! I’m sure she’s beautiful, and hilarious, like you.

You better not make us wait too long! ;)

Love, love, LOVE this shoot! How perfectly preppy! As a woman who got her sweetheart to throw away his brightly printed button downs and square toed shoes in favor of Sperrys and polos, I’m seriously into this shoot, too!

Hope all that kissing up to Mama scores us those Baryshnikov photos! I saw him in his skivvies with White Oak Dance Project, and despite the fact that he still had an enviable bod, the age difference just felt too big. I was only 15, after all!

Lemon – Right on. I mean, seriously, crows feet shmows shmeet; just smile! It’s a little ridic to hide your happiness. Great advice!

Katherine – I agree; natural looking makeup is definitely the smartest way to go for a shoot. And I’d add that it’s always fun to go strong with one feature, like the eye, or the lip. But never both :)
