DIY WEDDING | Martha + Robert at Calamigos Ranch in Malibu, CA | A couple tackles one of the toughest wedding color schemes around… in stride. Duh! Winning.

Hey, you guys!  Ok, so even though someone took an ish-nay in our stairwell the other day, I’m in great spirits!  Let’s hear it for that!  Here’s why: one of our wonderful vendors sent me a preview of her newest collection, and I ’bout DIED.  It’s really, really purty.  So, uhh, I’ll be sharing that loveliness with all of you quite soon, OBVS.

Ok, now, in other related news, I have an update on the *situation* going on in our building.  Our management company seems to have kicked things into high gear, because they stopped by in person yesterday to discuss what happened.  This is because my honey wrote a pretty awesome, extremely composed (and at times hilarious) letter to them itemizing the craziness that has transpired in our building.  Mind you, we’ve lived here little more than a month, and we’ve already experienced odd-smelling hallways, cigarette butts in our stairwell every day, dudes doing drugs on our front stoop, EVERY DAY, ALL DAY (←true story; in fact, one of them got arrested by five cops two days ago, and I witnessed the whole thing.  And I sorta wish I hadn’t ’cause now I feel one of those creepy guys thinks I reported him.  Sigh.).  Aaaaaand of course… the final act… the piece de resistance… the best actor in a comedy of errors… the Mighty Crap I spoke about the other day.

WELL.  I’m happy to report that mgmt is 1) reinstalling a lock on the building’s 1st of 2 front doors (so no one can lurk in the mailroom), and 2) they’re installing cameras.  Woo!  Beware all future poopers!  You will be captured and humiliated, because I will post that s*** on youtube.  HAHAHAAHH I KILL MYSELF.

I think I’ll get to the wedding now.  I’m sure Martha and Robert are thrilled to be reading about Number 2 in their feature.  Umm… thanks for being cool about this, guys. ;)

Ok, SO!  I think this wedding is marvelous, on myriad levels.  When Alders Photography submitted the gorgeousness, I couldn’t wait to bring it to your faces.  Here we go: first of all, this couple was meant to be together.  I’ll let you read about it in Martha’s delightful write-up.  Two, she’s gorgeous, and she rocks that flapper-esque dress like a rockstar.  I mean, just look at her.  LOOK AT HER.  Bravo, Martha.  Three, they have an orange color scheme and it looks AMAZEBALLS.  You guys, this deserves applause, because it is not simple to pull off an orange color scheme with flying colors like this.  Seriously, it isn’t.  No, SERIOUSLY.  It isn’t.

Fourth: they have a mariachi band.  Period.

Fifth: she’s got a great bit of advice for all of you planning brides out there, and I suggest you take heed.

Sixth: ducks.

Ok, without further adieu… check it out!

Here’s a rundown of this fabulous day, from the bride:

I wanted the wedding to feel fun, yet intimate. I wanted it to feel romantic.  We chose all the songs played during dinner.  They were special to us; they reminded us of each other.  We also picked specific vows & ceremony readings that described us.  He whispered the lyrics to Angel, by Jack Johnson during our first dance.

All the stationery was DIY, with the assistance of my talented sister.  She designed the menus, programs, invitations, save the dates, engagement announcements, escort cards, maps, goodbye wands, & favors.  She knows me so well that she knew exactly what I would want, before I even knew it!  From there, we printed at home, cut at home, had a few putting-together sessions with friends, and we pulled it off!

I carried mostly white roses with a few orange ones.  I wanted to keep it simple, with bursts of orange.

The mariachi was important for me because we both have Mexican backgrounds.  Robert is also of Asian descent and during one of our dates, we discovered that he was born the Year of the Dragon and I the Year of the Monkey.  Both descriptions indicate we were meant to marry.  I thought that was a nice touch to add onto the favors, which were fortune cookies.

My best advice would be to try to relax and enjoy every moment.  The day goes by so quickly, you really have to focus on stopping to enjoy the hard work.

So, tell me, what do you think?  Are you a fan of orange?  How do you think Martha and Robert did?

Other topics worthy of discussion: funny stairwell findings / what’s your color scheme? / are you DIY’ing it? / the level of hate you have for me for not yet sharing the preview I referenced at the tippy top of this here post.

And, GO!

xoxo!  – Alison

Ha, “amazeballs” – what a cool word! I love it. It definitely describes this wedding!!! :) Great work the color scheme. On another note I’m in disbelief over your story. What the heck is that?? How could someone do something like that inside of a building, out in the open? I’d be so worried about getting caught! Not that I’d even consider doing that, though. Just want to make that crystal clear. ;) Glad they’re taking measures to prevent another ‘dumping’. :\

So cool, mariachi band at a wedding. I’ve never seen a mariachi band before but when I renew my vowes I want one. Great wedding btw, really beautiful captures.

  16. Sarah (A Paper Proposal) on March 11, 2011

Ahhh, I love Calimigos! I considered it for my wedding venue…so pretty!

I have to say, I’m usually not hugely into orange, but it’s done really well here. Not too much, just bright pops of color.

Those floral arrangements on the tables are pretty…COOL (I never use that word, but it just fits!). The flowers themselves are elegant, but the presentation is fun!

  17. lizzie on March 11, 2011
