BLOGGISTAS | Best of Ombre Inspiration: Then and Now and Weddings! | Guest Post by Andrea Gray Harper… plus Bambino Strikes Again.

As we continue to review Bloggista applications (if you haven’t heard from us yet, please don’t fret, it’s taking us LIKE FOREVS to get through them and decide. you kind of all hit us with all of your best shots, rendering it painfully difficult to make quick, easy decisions. which likely means that about five times as many Bloggistas as once planned will actually get a LET’S-DO-THIS from TKB. a good thing?  methinks…)

… Like WHOA.  Tangent in the premiere paragraph, eh Alison?  My affliction is growing worse by the hour.  Here, let me get back on track…

As I was saying, I’m truly overjoyed about this particular Wednesday afternoon, and mind you I’m saying that while trying to survive from inside the thickest and most aggressive cloud of puppy gas ever documented by man.  So, why the transcendant excitement, despite these hardships?  Because today is the day I get to introduce to you our newest Bloggista and DIY Contributor.  Huzzah and mitzvahs!  Her name is Andrea Gray Harper, and she’s the talent behind AGH Event Maker.  And the inspiration she sent me a couple weeks back for her very first introductory post pretty much blew my BRAINS OUT.  Like, I’m sitting here, still picking my brains up from off the floor, piecing together memories once held so dear, no longer connected and comprehendible because my brain is all in shambles.  I’m going to have to post my partial memories onto Craigslist’s Missed Connections so I can try and make sense of it all.

But in the meantime, I present to you the more level-headed young woman involved in this post today… Andrea, kindly take it away…

… wait, Andrea… Bam wants my attention — what’s that, Bam?  Oh, you smell something?

It’s YOU, DEAR.  Come on, I know you know it.  Stop lyin’.

 Yeah.  Exactly.

Ok, take it away NOW, Andrea!……..

Hey y’all, Andrea here. I’m so excited to share my posts with you all! Thought I would start you all off with one of my current obsessions, ombre. As a student of textiles I have been fascinated with this technique for quite some time now, but I am truly excited with what I have seen of it in the wedding industry. Here’s a quick bit of history on the technique: also known as irise, rainbow prints, and fondu, ombre is distinguished by a gradual shading and blending of one color into another. The technique was first used in paper printing and moved to textiles in the mid 1800’s.

For me, the connection between ombre and weddings all began with Gwen Stefani’s John Galliano designed Dior dress from 2002. sigh.

Behold a few of my favorite ombre cakes out there…

I especially swoon over the one on the left, below, where they have gone so far as to make the layers on the inside ombre, genius!

A couple more pretty details, like paper pom poms and colorful twine…

And check out these dresses! what do you think?!? I love the idea of a white dress with a hint of color! Looking back on my wedding, I would probably go this route if I had the chance…what about the maids? I you plan on sticking with all white, perhaps the ladies could make the ombre happen? Thank you, Nicole Miller for dreaming up these adorable dresses pictured below!

So, are you over ombre yet? hope not! here’s a mishmash of a handful more touches for your wedding…

Wait and one more thing… I will leave you all to ponder this: Ombre Hair

Pretty sure this is what my hair looks like after I am lazy about dyeing it for a few months…but hey, if it works for Drew….

So what do you y’all think?!  I truly cant wait to hear your responses!

xoxo!  - Andrea, of AGH Event Maker

  1. Mindy on August 31, 2011

I posted about ombre on my own blog on Sunday, and since then this is the THIRD blog post I’ve seen featuring ombre! I love it! I like to think of myself as a trendsetter, hehehe!

  2. Megan on August 31, 2011

When you teased a trendsetter post on Twitter, my first thought was, “oh, like ombre?” I do love that pink cake though.
Aaaaand I love that cat. Franky, Francois, Gereralissimo Franco, you really can’t go wrong.

  3. Claire Martine on August 31, 2011

    1. We’re loving ombre! A creative way to tie together different colors without the awkward tie dye option.

    2. Loving the Andrea + Frank duo. :)

    3. Looking forward to an Ombre Pinterest board? Crazy <3 for Pinterest this morning. (

  4. Courtney McBee DiCicco, via FB on August 31, 2011

Our wedding cake was ombre too! Everyone loved it – it was a major hit!!

  5. Lisa Tilley-Newman, via FB on August 31, 2011

I rarely like wedding gowns with color in them, but this I LOVE!!!

  6. Koru Kate on August 31, 2011

Ah, so sweet to see some kitty love here! Frank is quite striking :-) I adore the purple ombre cake, it’s divine.

  7. Belle The Magazine on August 31, 2011

OMG! Thanks a lot for the comment about my Maggie Austin cake + Atelier Versace gown. I really appreciate it! … Glad you liked it!

  8. gigi on August 31, 2011

LOVE those cakes, flowers, table settings, and dresses. I guess I love ombre!

  9. Lena on August 31, 2011

I’m LOVING the newest Bloggista-could she and that gato get any cuter? And does this mean that I’m required to get a pet of some sort? Say a chimp or a jelly, because obviously dog and cat are taken, and besides, I think one gassy little monster in enough for this Knotty family? I’m on it.

  10. Always love a good dose of ombre! I am a definite fan of the Nicole Miller dresses…any of those would look stunning on a bridesmaid.

  11. Aleah + Nick on August 31, 2011

    Ooh, I like Andrea already! That ombre table cloth tickled my fancy….{A}

  12. Alicia @CharityWedding on August 31, 2011

I have to say very little works for Drew considering she is constantly whining. OR perhaps just has a super annoying voice. But I’d just like to let it be known that Ombre hair is awful. WHY?! Why are you paying hundreds of dollars for what I could get at Walgreens and a 6 week wait time? Taking something as glorious as Ombre and using it to justify your nasty hair is a disgrace. And this is how I really feel.

  13. Alison on August 31, 2011

Ohh but Alicia, my doll – oh wait, crap, you took away my ability to offer up the snarky “tell us how you really feel” retort by putting it to work within your very comment found above! That was well played. Very well played. This time you win. ‘Alicia.’ If that’s your real name. But there will be other times. And maybe you won’t be so prepared…

In other news, I totally agree. Which is a given, since you and I always agree, on such things. How boring. (And Andrea’s clearly down with us, too.) Evidence? “Partially Grown Out Highlights…”

  14. bridal girl on August 31, 2011

I love the cake and the color ombre is also something to love! Love Drew too!!!

  15. Alicia @CharityWedding on August 31, 2011

I’ve been having commenter’s remorse and since I am back, I may as well take the opportunity to amend. Welcome Andrea! I loved your post, I just got distracted by grown out highlights. I’m sorry for my rudeness but I am sure you understand. And your little Frank is a doll!

  16. Cassie | Meet Mrs B. on August 31, 2011

So…when it looks like it’s SUPER dark v. SUPER light regrowth in the hair…it looks MEGA weird. I never understood it because you paid LOTSO bucks to get your hair done…only to have it look like it wasn’t done at all? Estoy…confused.

ON THE OTHER HAND…ombre hair is not to be confused with balayage…which SORT of does the same thing, only the colorist actually PAINTS the highights into your instead of putting it in the foil making it look more natural. I mean…if I wanted to pay mucho dinero to color my hair…I’d AT LEAST want it to look more natural than having tiger stripes in my hair…

but I maybe alone in this one…

AND THAT is what I get for working in a salon.

  17. Cassie | Meet Mrs B. on August 31, 2011

p.s. A Simpson-Wentz whatever her name is…could NEVER pull off that look. She was waay better when she just stuck to the dark, and had a LITTLE more meat on her bones.

  18. Andrea Harper on August 31, 2011

Thanks so much for all your comments! glad to know so many people love ombre as much as I do! and don’t worry, you will be seeing more of Frank, promise. Love the Ombre hair commentary, I like getting your blood flowing! AND I’m pretty sure I have ombre hair right now…….and it’s not on purpose….yikes!

  19. Elle on September 1, 2011

I think everything has been said here about Ombre hair, but truthfully you have to give credit where credit is due. Someone managed to convince several A-list celebrities that looking like (and I hate to say it this way, but you all totally know what I mean) trailer trash was acceptable, and not only that a service that should paid for. That man, is a marketing genius.

Besides for hair though – what I really dig is Ombre nails… I am in the process of convincing myself that this is the unique something I want to bring into my bridal look. Secondly, I love the cake – but that could also be due to the carb ban as we are 2 months out from the wedding. But seriously, those cakes are not only gorgeous, but they really do look delicious!

  20. C on September 1, 2011

I have a secret obsession with Ombre. I just love everything about it and I can’t get enough of it. Thanks for letting me indulged in my obsession. :)

  21. Christie O. {Hindsight Bride} on September 1, 2011

I don;t think I’ll ever tire of ombre, especially pink ombre

  22. Nora on September 2, 2011

hiii my name is nora and i haven’t dyed my hair in months. i was trying to get back to my natural color for over a year and i just gave up. it’s “ombre” but it is also free. :) i’m glad it’s in style so i can not look super trashy. well ok, i’ll admit it’s trashy but i can just chalk it up to celebrity influence til it grows out more!!

  23. Marty J. Christopher on September 3, 2011

I like ombre hair and first noticed it ages ago on SATC when, in the last season, SJP started rocking it. It definitely doesn’t look right on everyone and has to be done well to work.

I’m excited about the newest bloggista, too. Congrats!

  24. Marie @ Emici Bridal on September 19, 2011

OMBRE! One of my favorite things.

  25. Kim on November 12, 2011

Hi, thank you for this gorgeous post! I am in love with the Nicole Miller dresses, but I looked on the website and I can’t find them. Can you please tell me where I can buy these?
