Smörgåsbord | What procrastination gets you, a taste of holiday life and a sweet sneak peek at what’s coming up…

Guess what?  We just got a tree yesterday.  OMGIKNOWIT’STERRIBLE.  WTF, us?  How did we let the tree-buying aspect of Christmastime elude us for so long?  I don’t want to make excuses, but it probably has something to do with how freaking busy we’ve been.  I think you guys know how redonkulously busy yours truly has been, but believe it or not, my other half has been even busier.  If that’s possible.  So yeah, the tree took a back seat this year.  But, as with most things, we happily discovered a silver lining in our procrastination: my baby niece and nephew, who recently came from Albuquerque to spend the holidays with us, were able to come along and pick it out!  You guys, you should have seen it; two babies in car seats, flanking a massive tree shoved in between them.  The scene = MAXIMUM ADORABLENESS.  This Christmas I have discovered that there is officially nothing better than shopping for a tree with little babies.

Now, I don’t know if you’re aware of this, but Christmas is, like, two days away.  TWO DAYS.  I truly hope you’ve wrapped up all of your shopping, because I have not, and I’m going to need my space as I sprint up and down the aisles for the last couple of gifts I still need to grab for some members of my family who have only *recently* decided what they want to see under the tree on Saturday.  (The babies, it’s the babies.  They’re a bit fickle.)

Anyway, I’ve been shoving a lot of holiday awesomeness in your faces recently, so I thought it would be a fun little change-up to give you a glorious sneak peek into the gorgeous outdoor wedding I’ll be bringing your way quite soon…

Wait until you see this wedding.  I’m telling you, it’s very likely that this one will go down in history as one of my all-time favorites.  WHOA.  I know, that’s big.

I’ll leave you with a lovely little quote that I find to be pretty well-suited to me and my honey… and I’m sure it’ll resonate with many of you wonderful readers out there. :)

We all are a little weird and life’s a little weird and when we find someone whose weirdness is compatible with ours, we join up with them and fall into mutual weirdness and call it “love.”

(… Did Dr. Seuss say that?  I have this vague recollection of it being a Dr. Seuss quote, but I’m not sure.  Anyone?  Anyone?  Bueller?)

And finally, I’d like to send you off into your day with a taste of one of my favorite artists, Quadron.  Hope you enjoy :)

Wishing you the happiest of holiday seasons!

xoxo!  – Alison

P.S. – Emily of Gem Photo and I are on the brink of selecting the four finalists for the photography giveaway.  OMGWE’RESOCLOSETOANNOUNCINGTHEM.  I can’t take it.

P.P.S – I’m working with another special friend on a DIY free printable, as mentioned.  You are gonna LOVE.  And it’ll be just in time for the New Year… hint hint nudge nudge.

P.P.P.S. – I hope you’re ready, because we’ve got more giveaways than we can handle, coming pretty soon.  Just thought I’d remind you.  :)

P.P.P.P.S. – I found a ridiculously funny site that I just have to share with you guys.  It’s called When Parents Text, and it’s an innocent riot.  Click here to check it out.  Almost every single one of those texts remarkably resembles something one of my parents would text to me.  Parents are simply too adorable sometimes.

STAY ORGANIZED | The best way to keep track of your RSVP cards… for your eyes only.

If you’re about to release your RSVP cards into the wild, drop what you’re doing!  Before you make another move, think about this: what are you going to do if you get a few unidentifiable replies?  Well, here’s a quick and easy solution that’ll put your mind at ease.

You’ve undoubtedly put a lot of effort into selecting and/or creating your invitations, and the last thing you want to do is mark them up with numbers or characters that will help you to identify who’s who.  But the fact remains that it’s not unusual for the occasional reply to come back nameless.  Here’s a super fun way to keep things in order as they start to come back to you:

An invisible ink pen!

All you have to do is assign numbers to your guests, and then write these numbers in invisible ink on the backs of each reply card.  Easy-peasy-lemon-squeezy.

By the way, at an extremely low price of $1.33, I instinctively start to doubt its quality.  That price screams “I’m going to arrive dry, but you’ll be out $1.33 and change, so you won’t complain.”  So I checked the reviews.  They’re practically all positive!  So I’m going to take a risk and recommend this, sight unseen.  (That’s typically VERY hard for me.)

Note: the post on Weddingbee is from 2007, so, understandably, the link is no longer relevant.  I found the pen here, however, and the reviews are very much up to snuff.

WEDDING PROP LOVE | pastel mustaches!!! | Smitten Sticks from Le Papier Studio

Found these little gems on Etsy in a shop called Le Papier Studio.  How ADORABLE are these?!  Designed by the very creative Vana Chupp, they’re a girlified version of what has become quite the popular prop in wedding photography across the country.  Just add a little pastel to anything, and look what you get.  Heck, even mustaches can look feminine!

“THE NEW MONOGAMY” | Wonder What Your Partner Is Thinking? | Also, “The New Wedding Cake!”

Update from the Editor (that’s me!)…

This post has garnered a lot of attention, as one might expect.  It’s quite a digression from what I typically post (well, save for the cuppie-cake aspect).  However, as we plan one of the most exciting and personal days of our lives, we can’t allow ourselves to ignore one very important thing.  How do we – as a couple – define our relationship?  It’s likely the most critical conversation to have with your significant other… whether or not you think you know how s/he feels.

The concept of monogamy is one that affects each and every one of us on a highly personal level, and the very thought that its traditional definition is being threatened can shake us to our cores.  Your comments on the topic have been so deeply thought out and so incredibly serious that I decided to give this post another day of life above the fold.  Let’s keep the conversation going…

* * *

Ok, so yesterday I randomly came upon quite the blog-worthy item.  It has little to do with wedding planning, but it has everything to do with love and relationships, which is of equal importance… some might even say greater importance.  Let’s begin.

LIGHT UP YOUR WEDDING | Creative ways to decorate your setting with light…

I came down to get some coffee, but before I could open the door, my three-year-old nephew swung it out in my direction.  He looked me dead in the eye, held out a closed fist, and then opened it to release a single doggy bone puzzle piece… which fell at my feet.  No words were expressed.  He then retreated behind the door from whence he came.

Do you think he’s trying to tell me something?

I LOVE BEAUTIFUL THINGS … {especially after the morning I’ve had} … Which is Why I {Heart} Elizabeth Messina

Happy Thursday, my friends.  I just escorted a HUGE bug to the other side of the street, and it was disgusting.  Though my 6-year-old niece and 3-year old nephew seem to think it’s “cooooooool” which I get, but my niece in particular kept calling it “pretty.”  Pretty?  It was an inch and a half (for serious) and it had two sets of mouth talons, because I guess it needs a backup set of mouth talons if the first set of mouth talons somehow fail him in his taloning pursuits.  (Makes me seriously wonder what I must look like to her, since she likes to call me pretty, too.)  Anyway, I needed some color lovin’ to try and forget about this morning’s experience.  This did the trick:

{Photo Board: Elizabeth Messina}

{Chewing the Cud / Xandra Zamora / Monkeys Always Look / Twigs & Honey / Icing Designs / Modern Press}

Thoughts?  Is this inspiring or is this inspiring?  Elizabeth Messina makes my heart pump more blood throughout my body, and at a faster pace, which simulates the feeling of being in love with her.  I’m feeling very confused, but I kinda like it.

MEGAN FOX’S WEDDING DRESS | Also, why I think Megan and Brian are attracted to one another…

So, I’m sure you’ve heard the news, right?  Brian put a ring on it!  On June 24 in Hawaii, 24-year-old Megan Fox married 36-year-old Brian Austin Green, the slender, sorta cute-ish boy, aka my third choice (it went Brandon, Dylan, then David, my distant third – did you even remember his name was David?  I had to look it up) from everyone’s favorite ’90s teen drama, Beverly Hills 90210.  They were wed by a Hawaiian priest, and Brian’s son, Kassius (… ok), served as their only witness.  Yeah yeah yeah… but have you seen her dress?  Because it was totally NOT what I expected Megan Fox to wear on Megan Fox’s wedding day.  Totally.  Not.  What I expected.

First of all, it was white.  OMG that was horrible I didn’t mean it.  I really like Megan Fox, honest.  Ok, getting serious now, here’s what I expected: tight-fitting, glitzy, snug, low-cut, curve-hugging, and sleek.  I guessed completely wrong, except for that last detail.  It was definitely sleek.  But tight-fitting, snug and curve-hugging (which all mean the same thing because I was trying to drive home a point)?  Not really.  And the glitz and glam factor?  Not even close.  Here’s Armani’s artistic rendering of what she wore: {Continue reading…}

Succulents and peace.  Two of my favorite things.  (FYI, that’s my guy’s hand.  The biggest glimpse I’ve granted yet!)

Alright.  A little overwhelmed here.  I feel like I have nothing of value to say.  All I can conjure is “thank you so much,” and “what an honor” and other sappiness like that.  Here’s the deal: you guys nominated me, and now THIS IS HAPPENING: I’m a flippin’ FINALIST in the Best Real Bride Wedding Blog category.  Say WHAT?!!  My excitement over this is beyond measure.  But, as I sit here trying to come up with something worth reading, my mind just keeps spitting out “duuhhhh.”

Point is, I’ve pulled up to this weird place called “a loss for words.”  You freaking people actually touched me so much that I don’t really know what to say.  Obvs., this morning’s post is going to be sort of brief, because I’m actually a little choked up right now.  I realize I’m being ridiculous – it IS just a blogger award.  But it’s like THE ONE I want, so badly.  So it gets me, it gets me right heeaaahh (points to heart).  Ok, getting on with it… I’m going to ask you a little favor: would you kindly vote for me?  If you already did, I appreciate it like crazy.  I couldn’t ask for anything more.  But if you haven’t… would you?  Each and every vote makes a serious difference.  You’d be surprised.  It’s nothing at all like American elections.  Just click here, or on this wee badge, below:

Thank you, from the bottom of my heart you guys!

In other news, my sister’s pwecious wittle babies are coming into town tonight, so to celebrate becoming a finalist… but moreso general family togetherness, which is far too rare since they live across the nation, I’m planning for us all to hang in the backyard and do a little o’ this (we’ve got heaps of leftover sparklers to burn up):

Also, I’d love to try on a few of these, wouldn’t you?

And I’d to go here:

I’m gonna leave you for now with one of my favorite quotes of pretty much ever, which has nothing at all to do with anything.  It’s from my little book of everything I’ve ever loved enough to jot down.  But before I’m through, let me once again say thank you, everyone, for visiting the blog, reading the blog, leaving your incredible comments and generally ruling as humans.  If not for you, I wouldn’t be doing this thing I do every day.  (:

GUEST BLOGGER | ‘Postcards and Pretties’ | City vs. Country Weddings!

Hello Knotty readers… I’m Chris from Postcards and Pretties and I’m so honored to be a guest blogger on The Knotty Bride!  Today I would like to share with you two completely different weddings that share a similar color palette of magenta and gray.

The first wedding takes place in New York City {representin’ Alison’s hometown} possibly a city hall wedding with a small reception to follow with a few family and friends.  Centerpieces of potted orchids decorate an airy space and in lieu of a traditional wedding cake… pink frosted cupcakes are served to the guests.

City Board: couple on the bridge {simply bloom photography} piano {this is glamorous} escort cards {martha stewart weddings} bouquet {the knot} orchid centerpiece {martha stewart weddings} chalkboard {design sponge} pink cocktails {martha stewart weddings} white utencils and tufted couch {this is glamorous} hydrangea centerpiece {brides} cupcakes {my little things}

The country wedding is sweet and a bit rustic.  A garden shed makes a great backdrop for this outdoor wedding that is surrounded by potted flowers.  Bridesmaids will hold hand-tied bouquets wrapped with magenta ribbon and pashmina wraps are available to keep the chilly air at bay.  The homemade cake is as simple as this wedding.

Country Board: greenhouse {country living} bride {d magazine} garden utencils {kiss the groom} ice cream {tartelette} potted plants {martha stewart} peony bouquet {poppies and posies events} cake {oh joy} bouquet wrapped with velvet ribbon {country living} violets {martha stewart weddings}

So tell me: what are your thoughts on these two distinct settings?  What would you say is more your style?  I’d love to know!

xoxo!  -Chris of Postcards and Pretties

Happy Friday, my good friends!  I hope you’re havin’ a good one so far.  Me?  Well, this week was three parts hella-busy and one part I-had-no-free-time, but also one part I-fell-in-love-with-a-new-site called “Stereomood.”  If you loooove music but you haaaaate a) having to arrange mixes that’ll fit your mood and b) having to wade through the muck only to hit your skip limit on Pandora too soon, then you’re gonna love this find.  (It’s that favorite one I mentioned yesterday.  This thing is on like all the time for me.  I lovingly refer to it as my life soundtrack.  Btw, currently obsessing over the “it’s raining” playlist.)

SOUTHERN BRIDE WITH SERIOUS STYLE {Plus: our Dad’s Day & the best parenting advice I’ve ever read…}

Happy Monday, you crazy kids.  How were your weekends?  Do anything special?  Fiancé and I spent a nice, calm summer day with my Popsicle et al and, all in all, it was pretty relaxing.  (Plus, I made a cake!)  By the way, to all the brides who got married on Father’s Day: I couldn’t imagine a more wonderful gift to your dad than to let him walk you down the aisle on such a meaningful day.  Both my Dad and I are major proponents of the idea!  So congrats to any of you who got hitched on Sunday – well played!

(Like the shoes?  You might love the Badgley Mischka Randee featured in this post.  Btw, if you like ruffled things, here’s my fave quilt EVER.)

Alright, today I’ve got a couple of things I thought I’d share with you, the first of which I’m going to pepper in throughout all the chatter of the second one…

So, number one = totally stylish bridal look inspiration, as photographed by the endlessly creative genius that is Elizabeth Messina and;

Number two = details about how my Dad spent his Father’s Day.  Plus, I’ve got a comment on good parenting at end of this post.  Well, more like an excellent quote on the topic.  Not that you care, but I’m sharing anyway.  (;

* * *

Ok, I am obsessed with this bride’s style, and think you might be, too.

* * *

Back to Dad’s Day… some of you might remember that little bit of unsolicited advice I dispensed about Father’s Day at the very end of this post right here; well, I like to make a habit of taking my own medicine, which translates into the kind of Father’s Day we gave the ol’ patriarch.  So, how did he spend his day?  Exactly the way he wanted to (most activities done with his loving wife by his side):

-watched his morning news programs
-watched Italy and New Zealand end in a tie
-went for a walk
-had a heart to heart with his kidsters
-took a shower
-went to a friend’s barbeque
-got heartwarming cards and calls from each of his kids
-watched a bunch of golf
-took a break to have dinner with us
-watched the end of the golf
-had an amaaaaazing black and white (choc/vanilla) cake with sprinkles, made by yours truly
-then we had him listen to this
-then he went for another walk, during which he thanked his wife (my Mom) for giving him wonderful children (which she did, thank you very much).  Awwwwwwww.  Right?

Sprinkling in more shots of the bride and this unbelievable wedding!

Gorgeous.  You MUST check out more on Elizabeth Messina‘s blog, Kiss the Groom.  You MUST.

* * *

Because yesterday was Father’s Day, and because proper parenting is so important and so little advice is given to those who don’t actively seek it out, I thought today would be the perfect day to include a passage my fiancé brought to my attention.  It’s by the great Kahlil Gibran, author of “The Prophet.”  I don’t have kids, so I’m no authority by any stretch, but I’ve got to believe this is one of the smartest bits of thought on the subject of parenting, imo:

Your children are not your children.

They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself.

They come through you but not from you,

And though they are with you, yet they belong not to you.

You may give them your love but not your thoughts.

For they have their own thoughts.

You may house their bodies but not their souls,

For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.

You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you,

For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.

You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth.

The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite, and He bends with you His might that His arrows might go swift and far.

Let your bending in the archer’s hand be for gladness;

For even as He loves the arrow that flies, so He loves also the bow that is stable.

~ Kahlil Gibran

Hope you enjoyed both bits of this post!  I’m curious, what do you think of today’s bride’s style?  Are you into the ruffle-mania, the statement headgear, the whole shebang?  Share your thoughts, either way!

xoxo!  -Alison

I ♥ YOUR PROPOSAL STORIES! (Also: promoting the blog & more wed obsessions!)

More on that loveliness in a few…

(Note: stories still being accepted)

Ok, so let me just say that the response to this has been AMAZEBALLS.  (Thank you, Michelle Ward, for turning me on to that one, by the way.)  I mean, I knew you guys would be into it, and I also knew you all had some pretty amazing stories to tell, but HELLO.  My inbox is flooded with heartwarming, well thought out, totally surprising, totally inspiring proposal stories that had me sitting on the edge of my seat yesterday with a tissue box at the ready.  And I have to say – the most surprising thing of all, so far?  The stories that have come in from the guys out there.  I don’t know how you came upon the site, where from or who recommended you visit, but I am SO GLAD YOU FOUND ME.  Because your proposal stories/photos/videos are RULING.  And by the way?  The stories I’m getting from all my females out there are equally as awesome – please don’t get me wrong, ladies.  I just felt compelled to give a z100 shout out to the fellas submitting their love-laden stories to the blog.  I didn’t expect it and it has made my year!  (Seriously, just wait until you read/see/watch these things.  I cannot wait to share them all!!!)

* * *

Fun fact: the fiancé has been mostly a back-end guy (SHUT UP) when it comes to the site here.  However, recently he’s been trying his hand at a little TKB promotion.  He asked me some time ago for a handful of my business cards, with the intention of handing them to engaged girls near his workplace.  Every day he says he sees ladies with huge rocks on their fingers and he calls them all “missed opportunities.”  (In a business sense, not a nailing sense, obvs.)  He’s really serious about this, and because I admire his business sense, and have always felt I can trust his public and interpersonal appropriateness, I thought, hey, why not?  It’s not my first choice marketing approach, but he certainly wasn’t reinventing the wheel.  Well, last night I saw him in action…

Scenario one: He spies a young woman with a ginormous engagement ring.  STOPS in the middle of the crosswalk.  RUNS TO CATCH UP WITH HER.  She’s listening to music and walking briskly.  Taps her on the shoulder and somewhat smoothly shoves the card in her face.  RUNS AWAY FROM HER AND BACK TO ME.

Scenario dos: notices a young couple sitting a couple tables away from us at dinner.  Asks me: “can you tell if she’s wearing just an engagement ring, or both an engagement ring and a wedding ring?”  Me: “Why.”  Him: “You know why.”  I’m already a little wary of what’s about to go down, but I decide to go along with it, and I peer over to check her finger.  It’s dark, I’m half-committed to the operation anyway, and so I can’t make out anything.  Me: “Can’t tell.”  Him: I THINK IT’S ONE… I’M GOING FOR IT…”  Me: “No… wait, WHAT?  No… ok fine.”  (He’s already up when I say ok fine.)  She gets up, he asks her if she’s engaged or married… WEIRDED. OUT.  She says, “umm… I’m married.”  He still gives her the card because how weird would that have been if he just walked away from the scene?!  Card wasted? check.  Girl sufficiently weirded out? check.  Valiant, if misguided, effort by the fiancé? check.

I took the remaining cards back.  Actually, I didn’t have to say anything – he handed them over.

I am rethinking this approach.  But even more, I’m waiting for these girls to leave comments on the blog.  I expect they will go something a-like a-this:

“umm, hi alison, I like your site, I’m glad some random dude accosted me on the street/while I was enjoying dinner with my husband in a restaurant and shoved your card in my face.  I know I gave him the dirtiest of looks when he turned around, but your business card is kickass and I just had to visit.  So all in all, a win-win!”

Quick reminder that Father’s Day is June 20th this year.  So if you’ve got a Hubby or Popsicle (that’s what I affectionately call my Dad; yeah, you can steal it) who deserves a little special treatment, DO SOMETHING for him.  No pressure.  But keep in mind the fact that the World Cup games may be slightly more important to the man than family time in a cabin upstate.  Just sayin’. FRIDAY’S FAB FINDS | June 11 | Part IV ~ obsessing over these wedding day details…

This wedding has made me fall deeply in love with the idea of having a wedding.  Don’t get me wrong; I adore weddings in general (I mean, YOU KNOW THIS).  But this wedding makes me excited for every bride who gets to design her day with awesome vendors and an awesome husband and what is clearly awesome design-mindedness.  But really, it’s the dreaminess of the pictures that did it for me.  Dreamy, ever-so-slightly-out-of-focus photos are soooooooo the number one thing in my book (aside from making sure you love the person you’re marrying, but that goes without saying… or does it?).

And by the way, her bridesmaids = ADORABLENESS.  Their shoes = ADORABLENESS to the MAX.

And now for some serious detail action:

UNIQUE E-SESSION LOVE | sara + dustin | Photos: Blue Dandelion Photography

Today’s fabulous e-session is a triple threat: we’re dealing with one incredibly talented photography team, a reDONKulously rad couple, and a particularly useful lesson in keepin’ it real, e-session-style.  Ya heard?  Ok, put on your raincoats.

You know what today’s couple has?  The right idea, that’s what.  When Doug and Courtney – the husband and wife team of Blue Dandelion Photography – sent me the e-session of Sara and Dustin, my excitement dial went from zero to eeelevuhn within seconds.  It’s no secret that I’m a sucker for balloon action.  But make ‘em all different colors and then you’re just spoiling me.  As if that wasn’t enough, what really got me going was the unique approach the couple took to their shoot.  It made me think to myself, “self, this couple knows what it’s all about…”

As you’re about to see, this shoot is dripping with playfulness that screams of a couple comfortable in love. Ok, here it comes…

For Sara and Dustin, they approached us in spring after their friends signed on with Blue Dandelion.  They are instantly excitable (in the good sort of way), and Sara has this ability to glean laughter from the most subtle points.  When we discussed their engagement shoot, they really wanted to take it in a different direction.  She said, “Dustin and I, while totally in love, are not the overly romantic type.  We were hoping our pictures could highlight our ‘goofy’ side.”  What could be more fitting than balloons, be it filled with air – or water!  We simply had a blast doing the shoot, including dodging cars (unsuccessfully) early on, crawling around storm drains and down railroad tracks, and concluding with our waterworks.

Ok, here’s the money shot!

WHAM!  Excellent shot, girlfriend!

I love how keeping it real for these two has very little to do with romantic poses and everything to do with having massive amounts of silly fun with one another.

Now, SERIOUSLY, how many girls do you know who are willing to get soaked during their ENGAGEMENT SHOOTS?  Some of you may be thinking, “I’d so be game for that,” but really think about it.  … Would you?  I’d like to think I’d be down, but I honestly don’t know.  And that’s why I love Sara.

I don’t know these two personally, but I have a feeling we’d make fast friends. Any girl who doesn’t mind getting her hair a little wet while getting her picture taken is a girl I admire.

Moral of the story: stay true to you and what you want/who you are as a couple, and everything will work out just as it should.  Also, water balloons make for AMAZING E-SESSION PICTURES.  I mean, how much do you envy these photos?  I now officially need to experience a shoot like this; I don’t think I have a single photo of myself completely soaked and I have an inexplicable longing to change that now.

So, what do you guys think of this shoot?  Are you digging the “let’s just have a load of fun today” approach this couple chose to take?  Would you water balloon it up for your shoot?  I’m dying to hear your take on this, whatever it may be!!!

xoxo!  -Alison

Ok, first things first: thank you guys SO MUCH for all the rad feedback on yesterday’s post.  I don’t know if you realize this, but when you comment and tweet (and even email me!) with your individual doses of love re: an idea I’ve shared or story I’ve told, it just makes my freaking day.  Don’t think I don’t check the comments and click my Twitter name to see who’s mentioned me, because I do.  And the great thing is that each time I do, I’m reminded yet again how lucky I am to be a part of such a positive, supportive and inspiring community of people.  If you were here right now, beside me, I’d kiss you full on the lips.  Nothing weird.  Just a passionate kiss between friends.

Ok, on to the main event…

Want a beautiful, heartwarming e-session?  Awesome, I just happen to have one right here.
