FASHION for your HEALTH | your happiness and your look | Not Enough Sun in Your Life? Try Wearing it.

In her “Notes on Nursing: What It Is and What It Is Not,” English nurse Florence Nightingale wrote that light – preferably sunlight – plays an essential role in the process of getting well.  She also said that those of us who are ailing “should be able to see … sky and sunlight,” as she observed that most patients tended to lie with their faces turned towards the light, much in the way that “plants always make their way to the light.”

This is why doctors are always telling us to make sure we get enough Vitamin D.  Among its many purported health benefits, it is understood that the Vitamin D our body produces when our skin is exposed even to just a little bit of sunshine can actually make us feel better emotionally.  Which means it can literally and figuratively brighten our day!  That’s kind of awesome.

So, now that we know that sunlight is pretty important for our general well-being, it seems like it should be easy enough to get our hands on it – err, faces in it – right?  Just step into the light for 10-15 minutes and ta-da, you’ve got yourself enough rays for the day (well, health-wise; certainly not fun-wise).

Unfortunately, while at work, many of us do not have the privilege of being seated near south-facing windows, and still others have the misfortune of being caged inside of too-high cubicle walls, seemingly fated never to experience the touch and feel of daylight between the hours of 9am to 6pm.  (Which reminds me – when did the acceptable amount of hours in a typical work day go from 9 – 5 to 9 – 6?  When and WHY did this change?  Yes, I am asking you, The Man.)

Anyway… so what are we to do if we can’t spend some time outside, soaking up those warm winter rays?

Well, if you really don’t have any time at all to do it, then a) you’re being seriously overworked, and b) you might want to check with your doctor about alternative ways to get your daily dose – ’cause, for real, it’s important.

Beyond that, I’ve got some fashion advice: how about a fun, alternative way for you to get some light in your life?  While it won’t result in the production of Vitamin D, it will give you a seriously useful boost of confidence that should last well beyond sunset.  What is it?  Well, unless you’re interested in waking up at dawn to catch a few minutes of sunbeam satisfaction before you head off to work, I suggest dawning some glam threads that’ll serve to brighten your mood… not to mention many of those around you!  I love it when I see someone who has really put some effort into her look… especially if it’s on a day when I HAVEN’T!  :)

So, what to wear?  Today, I’ve gathered up a healthy mix of fun, shimmering, soft, chic and romantic looks for the flashion-obsessed bride!  Any sparkle or glow in your get-up will do; from a dress with lots of glitz, to a clutch that catches some serious light, to earrings that illuminate your immediate surroundings.  Whether you’re into a frock with some flash, or you prefer a soft, chic look that leaves the razzle-dazzle to a super accessory, it doesn’t matter… when you arrive at your bachelorette party in any one of these get-ups, you’ll look and feel hotter than each and every one of those girls on stage at your future hubby’s bach… I mean, any of those girls in their winter coats working the ski lifts at the lodge.  Because that’s where men go for bachelor parties; they go to ski lodges, and then they turn in early.  ;)

GIFT LOVE | Only Things I Like More Than Great Gift Ideas Are Great Gift Inspiration Boards…

These gift ideas caught my eye so firmly, that I just had to share.  Though I think my love for them is quite apparent, given the very crudely exacto’d page tears on the right side of each leaf.  Somehow, I need to learn an effective way to manage my excitement when I’m tearing that excitement out of somewhere and scanning it into somewhere else that the world is going to see.  Any suggestions on how to reconcile thrill and precision?

I will eagerly await your advice; in the meantime, delight in these very glam, very thoughtful gift ideas.  Perfect for the holidays, a bridal shower, your office’s secret Santa (does capitalizing his name mean I still believe?)… really, any opportunity you may have to present someone with a little bit of superb style.  Plus a little assistance for the man in your life…

By the way, I’m starting with my favorite item, the Banana Republic Viscose dress on the right – which, by the way, I CAN’T FIND ANYWHERE.  Even right when this issue of InStyle Weddings hit newsstands!  Anyone able to locate it?  Such a dreamy frock… I want to be wearing it right now.  And I want to be wearing it for my rehearsal dinner, too because it is SO RICHLY BEAUTIFUL.

Do You Realize What Today Is? Not Much Time Left To Find Your Look!

Seriously, I’m asking.  Do you know what today’s date is?  Because it just hit me; it’s DECEMBER 14, 2009.  That means that New Year’s Eve is just around the corner.  We’re nearly half-way through the month, and I’m a little worried you might not know what you’ll have on as you bring in the New Year.  This is an issue.

Since I’m so incredibly concerned about this, I’ve compiled twin sets of my favorite dresses, jewelry and clutches… plus a hot shoe.  These all have one – well, two, major things in common: they will require layering, as in a heavy coat since you will suffer hypothermia should you walk out in the threads posted here, alone… and, second, I adore them.  Haha, that’s so not important to you… but if you keep coming back, it could be that you like some of the things I like, so maybe the I love it factor is, indeed, relevant?  ;)

And now, the divalicious dresses, glistening gold jewelry and the cutest freakin’ clutches I’ve seen lately.  Add these wow factors to your look, (especially this first backless number I’ve been coveting for about a month) and you’ll blow ‘em all away.  You can snag each and every one of these over at shopbop.

Coming up next: Keeping It Bridal – you’re a bride, so dress like it; great ivory, white and cream looks for New Year’s Eve...

Wedding Inspiration ✴ Color & Detail ✴ Should We Leave It to the Birds?

They’re staring at that horizon for a reason…

natureandart on Etsy - Love birds 14 - original oil on canvas painting

Thing is, I’m not a bird, so I’d be lying if I claimed to know why.  What I can tell you is why I would fix my eyes on that view:

To me, a sunset horizon is peaceful and soothing to the soul.  Its colors are awe-inspiring; they capture our attention and bring about a moment of calm reflection.  Perhaps most of all, a sunset is evocative of a bringing to an end… an end which sets the stage for a new beginning.

I don’t know about you, but to me, that spells wedding!

So it’s no wonder that the painting above, entitled “Love Birds” by natureandart, captured me with its blended tones of that most beautiful time of day.

When I saw this image, I got so excited.  You know that feeling you get when you find something that speaks to you?  (Bear with me.)  This is part of the fun of planning your own wedding.  When you discover something – maybe a new piece of artwork, or a brilliant piece of jewelry, or an especially beautiful and carefully detailed handcrafted good – and its tone, or its shape, or its meaning… fits seamlessly into the scene you are working so hard to create.  I love it when that happens.  And this painting is SO that.

I hope you like these colors and details… remember, just hover over the image if you’d like to learn more about where to get it and what it’s called.

By the way, stay tuned… later, I’m going to share with you a few new details I’ll be infusing into MY wedding.  (Hint: one of those details is below!)  You have no idea how excited I am to post them.  And I certainly hope you’ll let me know what you think.  I love getting your suggestions!  :)

Recognize this bewitching bouquet of butterflies?  It was handcrafted by a young woman named Laura, whose incredible Brooklyn wedding was featured in none other than Martha Stewart Weddings!  And guess what?  If you love this image as much as I do, then you’ll be quite pleased to learn that Martha has launched a brand new line of invitations on Pingg, an online invitation service!  Many of my absolute favorite images from the magazine are now available as personalized invitations.  Seriously, how cool is that?!

But if it’s this butterfly bouquet that’s got your gaze, and you’d like to fashion one similar to Laura’s, visit the Butterfly Bouquet How-To over at Martha Stewart Weddings.

I realize there isn’t any gold to be found in the ‘Love Birds’ painting – the centerpiece of this here post.  But I’m sure that if there’s one thing that comes to mind when you imagine a sunset, it’s the golden rays of that shimmer and shine as the sun begins to set… am I right?

So, here’s some loveliness with those golden rays in mind:

The Wedding of Stationer Cheree Berry! Colors: Red, Orange, Pink, Robin’s Egg Blue Courtesy: Martha Stewart Weddings

Cheree, Jeff et al

Cheree Berry’s my hero (of weddings).  Here’s why.

As you know, I’m a big fan of the wedding wow factor – whether it be an inspirational color scheme as unique as it is stunning, details that inspire the crafty creative inside me, or invitation suites that seamlessly tie into the wedding they are so dutifully announcing.  How do you know if a wedding has, as some would say, brought it, or, as I would say, achieved a wow factor of patentable heights?  I liken it to what inventors… or at least what Greg Kinnear who played an inventor in a movie… call the “flash of genius.”  This doctrine held that “the inventive act had to come into the mind of an inventor in a ‘flash of genius’ and not as a result of tinkering.  The new device, however useful it may be, must reveal the flash of creative genius, not merely the skill of the calling.”  Well, replace inventive act with wedding, and new device with innovative theme, colors and details, and you’ve got a (pretty underdeveloped and possibly flawed but works so far) formula for determining which weddings rise above.

Sometimes, if we’re lucky, we stumble across these standout performers and, when we do, our reactions are quite uniform: we get really excited, we sit back (or if you’re me, scrunch the shoulders and hunch over like Gollum protecting the ring and get as close to the screen as possible), and revel in the beauty.  Many try, and while countless weddings I’ve come across achieve near perfection, there are the few, the precious, precious few, that achieve a certain divine Greatness.

Cheree and Jeff

Featured in Martha Stewart Weddings, the transcendent beauty of Cheree Berry‘s wedding decor, which employed a brilliant palette of reds, oranges, robin’s egg blue, and splashes of pink, is beyond inspirational… it’s perfection, pure and simple.

So Martha et al, I would like to extend my grandest appreciation for this, another miraculous gem of a wedding spread from the kings and queens of Layout Land.  While the majority of images I’ve featured below are directly from the lustrous, silken pages of Martha Stewart Weddings Magazine – which unfortunately you can’t access unless you have one, or you’d like to grab coffee with me and my copy – a handful of them can be found over at Martha Stewart Weddings, the online version.  Isn’t the internet wonderful (mostly)?

1. MSW Cover

Those sunbursts – whether real or a Photoshop flourish – are so beautiful, aren’t they?  Sunset is the best time of day for a lover of brilliant colors and tones.  I get so excited about a sunset inspired wedding palette when I look at this photo of Cheree and Jeff:

It shouldn’t be a surprise that I am very excited about her shoe choice.  Need I remind you?

Deserving of a close up…

Now, check out the brilliant reds, oranges and pinks of her bouquet, comprised entirely of ranunculus, as well as the tiny golden bee, one of her stationery motifs.  How I love the robin’s egg blue ribbon at the base of the floral arrangement.

MSW Cheree Berry 3

Her bouquet, up close:

Cheree's ranunculus bouquet

The mother of all superb invitation suites.  I tip my hat to you, Cheree.  Will you do mine?  I’d like it exactly the same as yours, except with my name and that of my future hubby.  Please?  ;)

MSW Cheree Berry 4

Cheree stated that a palette of reds, oranges, and pinks is “too perfect,” adding robin’s egg blue to splendid mix of bright, bold tones.  I love her details – the red calligraphy, the little bee she added to her reply card, Love Mail printed in the upper right corner of the envelopes – it’s art, and, at least for me, she accomplishes what she states is her goal with the suite… “to evoke a big smile.”

Here’s a close up of that adorably delicious looking (and, I’m sure, tasting) lollipop stand:

That cake takes… itself?  (Cheesy?  Yes.  A pun anyone would be hardpressed to resist?  Also yes.  So it stays.)  Simplicity coupled with color is a fine combination, done quite expertly here:

Wait, what’s that?  That huge red board that reads, “PLEASE TAKE A SEAT”…

MSW Cheree Berry 8

It’s her AMAZING seating chart!!!  Now, up close:

I love everything about this – the personalization, the hard work involved, the fun, the color, EVERYTHING.  Cheree told Martha it was styled after the Plinko game on The Price is Right, which was definitely my favorite game on that show.  I have to give this a difficulty rating of *Intricate* and potentially *Frustrating* but if you’re looking to really wow your guests and you’ve got some time on your hands, check out the How To for detailed instructions.

My Wedding: What I’ll Be Hiding Under My Dress…

I couldn’t keep it a secret any longer.

I’m going to show you my wedding shoes.  I’m really gonna do it.  I can’t find a good enough reason to hold it back another second.

But first, some background…

I covet a pretty little peep toe in a rich, BOLD cherry red.  It’s my thing.  We all have our things.  Many of us (myself included) have many different “things.”  But one thing is for sure: I would sleep with my red heels if I didn’t think I’d lose an eye overnight.

Now, if that rich, bold cherry red peep toe is by Nine West, well then, I’m sold… because I heart Nine West.  Want to know why?  Let me count the ways:

~They have some really lovely shoes, with the occasional absolute gem of a design

~I can usually wear them all night without going numb or grafting a section of skin from my pinky toe

~They are totally within budget and do not result in the guilt we so often feel when we’ve overspent (you know who you are)

Girls, with a list of pros like that, what’s not to love?!

So, without further adieu, behold, what I’m puttin’ on my feetsies…

Nine West "Starfish" in your face view

I have to say, the above stock images from Nine West leave much to be desired in the way of flash and impact.  I’ll have to track down something more drool-inducing.  Stay tuned.

In the meantime, feast your eyes on the following runners-up.  I don’t have favorites – I love them all!
